Dental Exam

Patient sitting in dental chair at Todd L. Jolly, DMD, Nutley, NJHere at Todd L. Jolly, DMD, we’ll examine your mouth and teeth and help you take care of both. Oral hygiene is vitally important to your overall health. It gets rids of bacteria in your mouth. Bacteria accumulate to form plaque, which can harden and cause long-term conditions like periodontal disease and gingivitis if it’s not removed.

While regular at home brushing and flossing is necessary to ensure your smile looks its best, visiting our office for a comprehensive dental exam is essential. We recommend that you visit us every six months to make sure your teeth remain healthy and you keep a healthy smile.

Why Get an Exam and How Often?

Dental exams allow us to assess your current dental care methods and provide recommendations for future care to protect your mouth and teeth from issues like gum disease and cavities. They also help us detect issues early on so we can fix them easily and quickly.

As for how often you need an exam, it should be every six months. However, be sure to consult our staff to determine how often you need an exam, as we may recommend that you visit more often depending on factors like frequency of cavities, smoking, and genetic vulnerability to gum disease and root and tooth decay.

The Dental Exam

We’ll start your dental exam by asking you several questions about your complaints. We’ll ask if you’ve had any dental problems and what those problems were like, including how long they’ve been bugging you and if any situations or actions agitate them.

During your dental exam, our dentist will examine your gums and teeth thoroughly for signs of gum disease, tooth decay, and other health issues. The dentist may also take x-rays to find out what’s happening below the surface of your gums and teeth. The images produced will help our dentist detect dental problems that can’t be seen by the naked eye.

We’ll ask you several questions about your present dental care methods, like how regularly your brush and floss your teeth, and whether you use fluoridated toothpaste.

Taking this information into consideration, we’ll show you techniques of proper dental care and provide recommendations on how to best promote your oral health. Moreover, at the end of the exam, you can schedule a future check-up or appointment with us.
